Reading, Writing, and Understanding
Just as the widespread use of Greek and Latin in the first centuries after the birth of Christ opened the door to ministry and travel for Christians who had mastery of those languages, the mastery of English today opens doors to Christians in ministry, education, business, and publishing. Southeastern’s Bachelor of Arts in English leads students to such a mastery, challenging them and training them in both writing and the critical thinking essential for good writing. These skills are explored not only through writing classes that build students’ confidence and experience with writing but also through literature and theory classes that help students grow in their ability to interpret the words of others.

Building a Foundation
Southeastern’s English program begins with our Christ-centered liberal arts (general education) core curriculum, where you develop an understanding and appreciation of God and His creation, human creativity and reason, and our place of responsibility as stewards in the world God has made. As you forge links between what you’ve learned in the core and the more specialized courses in your major, our hope is that you also begin to relate all that you learn to your life and your faith.

Girding Up Your Pen
Within the English major itself, literature classes—including those in British, American, African-American, and Adolescent literature—enable students to analyze how language has been and can be used creatively to impact readers. You’ll learn writing skills by studying important works of literature, and you’ll practice critical thinking through your interpretation of these works. Other classes, such as advanced expository writing, creative writing, and oral interpretation, allow you to practice writing and experiment in performing literary works.

Foreign Language Study and Electives
The English major’s foreign language requirement will expand your perspective while helping you prepare for graduate school. The program’s space for elective courses enables you to customize your studies upon the English program’s foundational coursework.
