February 2022

Greetings from Joel Johnson!

Hello to my Fire Family!!! Life sure can be a roller coaster. Community is vital. I have had the opportunity to celebrate great accomplishments with so many of you and to come alongside you during times of heartbreak and loss. One thing I love about you all is how you support your friends, classmates, and alumni you often don’t even know. The bond we all share as alumni gives us all thousands of people we can celebrate with and support. You all are amazing and I am honored to be in the position I am in to serve you.

Men’s Basketball Update

What an exciting season it has been for our program! Our team is currently ranked #18 overall in the country, has a 20-5 overall record, and is sitting in 1st place in The Sun Conference standings with 3 games to play. In the classroom, our team also achieved a significant goal this fall as we had a cumulative team GPA above 3.0. In the community, we have taken on a partnership with Team Impact and are working with a young man named Xander. (Picture from team time with Xander playing video games in the locker room last week is attached) This relationship has been a powerful and transformational one for our student-athletes. For more information on Team Impact, see this link:

This is an incredible group of young men working hard to maximize the gifts they have been given on and off the court and to positively impact the community around them. It has been a privilege to journey with them along the way.

Although our locker room project is not fully complete from a construction or funding standpoint, there has been tremendous progress and we are almost to the finish line! I wanted to give you a sneak peek of the transformation in this video and also a game day picture from this past weekend. Our team has been able to use the space on game days but will not formally “move-in” until the project is completed in the coming weeks.

As this season and project come down the final stretch, your continued prayer for our team and support for this project is greatly appreciated.
