Fall Commencement 2022 – Watch Live

What Should You Bring to College?

Starting college is an exciting time, and you’ll want to be prepared well before you arrive. If you’re spending this summer getting ready for your first year at SEU, here’s a handy dorm checklist to get you started!

Dorm checklist – What to bring

If you’re living on-campus in one of our residence halls, you should know that each room includes beds, desks, chairs, closet space and dressers appropriate for the number of students assigned to that room. Mini blinds are provided for the windows in all dorms.

While your individual needs may vary, here’s a good list of necessities to get you started.

  • Bed linens such as blanket, bedspread, pillow, mattress pad and sheets*
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Toiletries/medications
  • Clothes/shoes and hangers
  • Laundry supplies such as a laundry basket or bag, detergent and dryer sheets
  • School supplies
  • Day-to-day necessities such as an umbrella, sunglasses and a flashlight
  • Mini-refrigerator; 4 cubic feet or less (approximately 20”x 20”)
  • Small microwave

Suggested extras

While not necessary, you might consider these items to help you feel more at home.

  • Bedside or desk lamp
  • Pictures or wall artDorm checklist
  • Bulletin board/dry erase board
  • Snacks
  • Organizing bins
  • Coffeemaker
  • Television
  • Bathrobe
  • Curtains

(Just remember you can’t use anything permanent or damaging, such as nails, to attach anything to your dorm walls. Most students use items such as white sticky tack, which removes cleanly and does not damage the walls.)

Dorm checklistClothing tip

While “campus casual” is the standard for attire around SEU, it’s a good idea to bring along a few professional-looking pieces of clothing for events such as in-class presentations, internship interviews or job fairs.

Don’t forget the tech

You’ll always want to stay connected, so be sure to bring your phone charger. If you prefer to tune in to music while you study, remember your headphones. Note that while you’re not required to own a computer, many students find that bringing their own laptop is very helpful, since it allows you to work and study just about anywhere. Wi-Fi is available throughout campus.

Our Residence Life team is here for you! Email studenthousing@seu.edu with any questions, or visit our FAQ page for some additional information. We’ll see you soon!

*The twin beds in our dorms are extra-long, measuring 80 inches in length. Many home goods stores and websites such as Our Campus Market sell this size bedding.

Commuter Students
If you’re starting your first year at SEU and you’re a commuter (non-residential) student, we have helpful resources for you too. Lockers are available throughout campus so that you don’t have to carry your belongings around all day (or make multiple trips to your car). And check the events calendar or MySEU regularly for events designed especially for you!
