Develop Your Talents & Creativity

The School of Music at SEU encourages all students to find their voice in Christ and provides a firm foundation of music education that translates to today’s most in-demand musical careers.

Our students turn their natural talents into a polished art form through hands-on, personal instruction in written and aural theory, instrumental and vocal technique, music history and literature, worship leading, pedagogy, and performance etiquette. Our faculty members — who have degrees, training, and performance experience that range from large state schools to major conservatories — work to prepare you for a career as a professional musician. Our team has experience in classical, orchestral, pop, jazz, folk, film, and church music/modern worship performance.

School of Music Mission & Vision

Mission Statement: The Southeastern University School of Music is committed to providing its students with a Christ-centered learning environment that focuses on preparing them for graduate studies in music as well as professional careers in the music field.

Vision Statement: Drawing on the breadth and depth of expertise provided by our faculty, the School of Music seeks to offer exposure to and training in several genres and styles of music, including Western classical art music, jazz, modern pop/rock music, traditional and contemporary worship music, and music from cultures around the world. In this it is our aim to

  1. provide students with a greater awareness of the possibilities of careers within music,
  2. connect seemingly disparate styles and cultures of music into a deeper yet functional understanding of the purpose of music, and
  3. lead students to a greater appreciation of God’s creativity and goodness through music.

We take seriously our responsibility, in Christ, to foster each student’s God-given talents and gifts. Through the integration of faith and learning, it is our desire and purpose to encourage our students and assist them in realizing the call of God in their lives.

After Your Audition

After you have auditioned for acceptance to the School of Music, our faculty will discuss your performance and make an admission decision. Audition results and acceptance letters for  he School of Music are sent via Acceptd (the same system you used to register for your audition). Be sure to log in to Acceptd often to check your messages.

Pro Tip: Email notifications from Acceptd may end up in spam folders, so please ensure that the Acceptd email address is listed as a contact/set up to be allowed to come to your inbox.

Here’s what to do if you are accepted:

  • Take your music theory placement test. You will receive instructions via Acceptd about how to take this online test.
  • Choose an ensemble. Being an ensemble member provides you multiple performance opportunities and additional connections with your fellow musicians. View our ensembles and performance opportunities here.
  • Work with your enrollment counselor and advisor to enroll in your classes. Your enrollment counselor and academic advisor will have a list of your recommended first-semester classes (customized to your instrument and music theory placement). Before you enroll in any classes, please be sure to work with them on which music-specific class(es) you should take in your first semester. They will continue to work with you on your class choices as you progress through your degree. You can also visit SEU.edu/catalog to view 4-year graduation plans.
  • Attend the all-school meeting for the School of Music. This meeting is held each semester during Welcome Week/orientation.

Here’s what to do if you weren’t accepted this time around:

You can audition again for school acceptance for a future semester while still proceeding with other classes required for graduation. Or, you may wish to consider minoring in music instead. You can also choose to join an ensemble even if you are not a music major (see Non-Music Major information below).

Transfer Information

Transfer students and current students changing their major must adhere to the degree plans, which may require extending the duration of their studies. Transfer credit for music courses is subject to the approval of the faculty and may be assessed via auditions, diagnostic exams, or other means.

If music is your forte but you’re called to a different career, good news! We offer all students the opportunity to participate in our music ensembles.

Once you’re accepted to SEU, if you choose to take part in an ensemble you can also complete a music audition to be considered for a non-music major scholarship.

Q: I’m interested in joining an ensemble class but don’t wish to audition for a scholarship at this time — can I still get involved?

A: Yes, if you simply wish to register for a music course, then you typically are not required to audition. However, some ensemble directors may request a performance sample to assess your current abilities and make placement decisions. Classes that require an audition regardless of scholarship include the Brass Quintet and some Jazz Ensemble positions (i.e. drums, piano, guitar, bass, and vocals).

Q: What if I can’t fit an ensemble class into my course load?

A: If you are unable to fit music course credits into your schedule due to overload, then you can opt to take the class for “zero credits” by submitting a request to your ensemble director. (Note that if you are a scholarship recipient, this will not affect your award amount.)

Q: How much is the scholarship amount?

A: For those that qualify for a music scholarship, the amount and number of scholarships awarded vary each year based on the availability of funds and students’ needs. Those who apply and audition earlier for the scholarship typically have a greater chance of being awarded due to there being more funds available. Keep in mind that music scholarships will appear in your student financial aid package, so it’s important that you complete your general SEU application and FAFSA before an award letter can be issued.

Q: What is the School of Music transfer policy?

A: Transfer students and current students changing their major must adhere to the degree plans, which may require extending the duration of their studies. Transfer credit for music courses is subject to the approval of the faculty and may be assessed via auditions, diagnostic exams, or other means.”
