Southeastern will hold a news conference Wednesday, September 15, at 3:00 p.m. in the Buena Vida Auditorium to announce a new partnership with the National Latino Evangelical Coalition (NaLEC) and the renaming of its Hispanic Leadership Center. The announcement coincides with the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is observed annually from September 15 to October 15.
The center will be renamed after Adolfo Carrión, Sr., who was the superintendent of the Spanish Eastern District of the Assemblies of God for nearly 40 years. Carrión’s son, Adolfo Carrión, Jr., will be in attendance.
SEU President Kent Ingle will be joined by Rev. Dr. Gabriel Salguero, founder of the NaLEC and SEU board member, and Carrión, Jr., currently the chief executive officer of Metro Futures, LLC, to give remarks.
Carrión, Jr., served as a member of the New York City Council, the Borough President of the Bronx and President of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials. In 2009, Carrión, Jr., was appointed by President Barack Obama to be his deputy assistant and the director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs. His work resulted in the establishment of a White House Urban Policy Working Group and the first interagency review in 30 years of federal government approaches and investments in the nation’s urban and metropolitan areas.
A lecture given by Rev. Dr. Salguero will follow the press conference. The event is open to the public. Full details will be released at the news conference.
About Adolfo Carrión, Sr.
Adolfo Carrión, Sr. served as the superintendent of the Spanish Eastern District of the Assemblies of God for nearly 40 years. During his extensive career in ministry, the district grew from 47 congregations in the New York City area to more than 360 congregations throughout the Eastern United States and internationally. He developed a 120-acre camp in the Catskills that housed a Bible college and provided a retreat for ministers and youth. Carrión also provided guidance and insight as a board member for many other organizations. In recognition of his leadership, work and service, Carrión was awarded honorary doctorates from Fuller Theological Seminary, New York Theological Seminary, Valley Forge Christian College and Nyack College. He received the “Keys to the City” of NYC from then Mayor Ed Koch. He also presided over the Association of Interdenominational Pentecostal Leaders, Radiovisión Cristiana, the Assembly of God Bible College of Puerto Rico and the NYC Christian Children’s Parade. He was also the founding chairman of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition.

The National Latino Evangelical Coalition (NaLEC) seeks to respond to a real need for Latino and Latina Evangelical voices committed to the common good and justice in the public sphere. The coalition aims to provide alternative voices to the existing partisan voices and to create national awareness about the growing number of Latino Evangelicals who are not captive to partisan politics. The NaLEC initiatives can provide a platform for this growing and often unheard demographic.
