SEU Appoints Dr. Leonard Sweet as Distinguished Professor

SEU has appointed Dr. Leonard Sweet as Visiting Distinguished Professor of Ministry Communication. Sweet is an accomplished scholar, author, preacher, ministry and academic leader, and founder and president of SpiritVenture Ministries.

Sweet is a regular contributing faculty member to the university’s Master of Arts in Ministerial Leadership Executive Cohort and the Doctor of Ministry programs within the Barnett College of Ministry & Theology‘s School of Divinity. He has received this appointment from SEU’s administration on the basis of distinguished scholarship, exceptional service in his discipline, and outstanding leadership within SEU’s ministry programs.

As the author of more than 70 books, 1,500 published sermons, and more than 200 articles, Sweet has been voted by his peers as “One of the 50 Most Influential Christians in America” by ChurchReport Magazine. He also speaks around the world, most recently in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil.

He is currently the Charles Wesley Senior Professor of Doctoral Studies at Evangelical Seminary, the E. Stanley Jones Professor Emeritus at Drew University, and a Visiting Distinguished Professor at George Fox University. In addition, Sweet is the president emeritus of United Theological Seminary, where he served as president and professor of church history for 11 years. 

He hosts a podcast, “Napkin Scribbles,” and a weekly lectionary vlog, “LenTalk,” on YouTube. In 2020, he launched his own publishing house, the Salish Sea Press, and a homiletics resource, preachthestory.com, in 2015.

Sweet earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Rochester, a Master of Divinity from Colgate Rochester Divinity School, and a Bachelor of Arts from University of Richmond.
