Hurricane Milton impacted Central Florida from October 9–10. In the wake of this monumental storm, thousands of Floridians — including many within our hometown of Lakeland — are dealing with its lasting effects.
As soon as the SEU campus was cleared of debris and deemed safe to reopen, our thoughts turned immediately to our neighbors in need.
Hurricane Relief Serve Day in Lakeland
This past Saturday, October 26, more than 100 students rallied together for a Hurricane Relief Serve Day, which was organized by SEU Missions. The day was dedicated to meeting the urgent needs of our Lakeland neighbors impacted by the storm.
Together, our teams distributed essential supplies, assisted with debris removal, and helped with community lawn work. Students also successfully distributed eight pallets of food and offered prayer to those affected by the storm. These efforts helped residents of Lake Bonny Shores, Parker Street, and Light & Life Park.
“One of the highlights of our efforts was serving the Light & Life Park community,” said Ahmed Velez, Director of SEU Missions. “This group of retired missionaries and ministers were severely affected by flooding from the storm, so it was a privilege to serve people who have dedicated their lives to serving others.”
A Heart to Serve
The post-Milton efforts are not the first time SEU has served in the aftermath of a hurricane or other natural disaster. In addition to helping in Lakeland and Central Florida after the storms of recent years, our students, faculty, staff, and alumni have also contributed to relief efforts for communities near some of our partner site locations when storms have impacted those areas.
“The reach of SEU Missions extends across the globe, however, we also recognize the importance of the domestic mission field,” said Velez. “Serving right here in our own backyard gives us the opportunity to share the love of Christ with our neighbors.”
“Our heart is to serve and help meet [our community’s] needs in any way we can,” agreed SEU President Dr. Kent Ingle. “We are blessed with an incredible community here at SEU, and I am so thankful for their support.”
