We are beyond excited to share that we held a groundbreaking ceremony this morning, August 12, to celebrate the beginning of construction on SEU’s early childhood development center set to open in the fall of 2026.
“The groundbreaking marks a pivotal step forward in our strategic plan. This center is more than a building — it’s a direct expression of our mission, meeting a vital educational need in our community, and investing in the future of our children,” remarked President Kent Ingle.
Transformational Support
The center will be named the Robert and Sandra Graper Early Childhood Center in honor of the late Robert and Sandra Graper, whose transformational gift to the university has played a pivotal role in bringing the project to life.
The Graper family — whose name is woven into the fabric of SEU — continues to invest in future generations through their enduring commitment. Their legacy extends far beyond financial contributions, serving as a lasting testimony to the eternal impact of Christ-centered education. (Read more about the Grapers in our 2024 President’s Report beginning on page 22.)
We also gratefully acknowledge a significant anonymous gift, which has provided foundational support for the center’s development.
“These contributions have helped lay both the literal and spiritual groundwork for a center that will shape young lives for decades to come,” said Senior Vice President of Advancement & Innovation Dr. Michael Steiner.
In addition, we extend our sincere gratitude to the Florida State Appropriations Committee for their confidence in our mission and their investment in this generational work. Their support not only helps bring the Robert and Sandra Graper Early Childhood Center to life, but also advances the timeless value of education.
A Classical Approach
The Robert and Sandra Graper Early Childhood Center will serve children ages zero to four through a classical education model, focusing on milestone and routine-based learning that encourages natural and outdoor play and classically guided exploration.
“The center’s classical approach will cultivate a love of learning, shape moral character, and guide children toward truth, beauty, and goodness — planting seeds of faith and wisdom that will grow for a lifetime,” emphasized Dr. Steiner.
The center will also provide hands-on learning and practicum experiences for students enrolled in the College of Education.
“We are very excited to begin offering a top-rate private educational option to children and families of our staff, faculty, and the greater Lakeland community,” said President Ingle.
