Bio

Dr. Roaten is an Associate Professor in the MS Professional Counseling Program. She has been a counselor educator for 20 years, and she was a school counselor for 12 years. Dr. Roaten coordinated school counseling programs in three universities; she has served in departmental and program leadership positions prior to coming to SEU. Dr. Roaten has supervised numerous clinical mental health and school counseling interns in her work as a counselor educator. She served as the clinic director for two university counseling centers. Dr. Roaten has supervised numerous LPC Associates in Texas.

Dr. Roaten's primary areas of focus and research are in counseling children and teens, issues related to supervision (servant leadership and remediation), and school counseling. Her research on counseling children includes experiential and expressive approaches, brain research and effective practices, school counseling related topics including use of basic skills in counseling, and specific topics (ADHD, bibliotherapy, etc.). She has presented research at numerous national and state professional counseling conferences. She has recently authored several book chapters on counseling children and teens.

Dr. Roaten is active in state and national counseling organizations, serving in numerous leadership positions. She is currently serving on the Professional Standards Committee in the American Counseling Association.
