Dr. Shin is an interdisciplinarian by trade and in heart, which stems from his hybrid life experiences as a child immigrant from South Korea. He has wide ranging experiences and education. He is a US Navy veteran and a real estate investor. He served as youth pastor at Korean Baptist and Presbyterian churches in central Florida. He taught English and helped lead adult and children's worship services in Korea. He is a licensed minister in the Assemblies of God, but has an enduring critical interest with Reformed thought that was fostered early in his Christian life by his brother who introduced him to figures like St. Augustine and John Piper. His PhD explored the intersection between Reformed thought, Pentecostalism, and postmodernism as they relate to the nature of knowledge.
He currently serves the university, the church, and academia in various roles. At SEU, he is the director of One Mission Outreach, the student ministry club of the Barnett College of Ministry and Theology. OMO serves senior citizens through weekly preaching with the Pastoral Team and local children on Sundays with CHARGE. He currently serves as co-leader of the Philosophy Interest Group in the Society for Pentecostal Studies.
His academic interests are in religious epistemology, philosophical theology, moral psychology, behavioral economics, trauma studies, and leadership. He is a firm believer that ministry students need in-depth training in philosophy, theology, psychology, business, and virtue-based leadership training. He has published several peer-reviewed articles and his book, Pentecostalism, Postmodernism, and Reformed Epistemology, is published with Lexington Books. His co-authored book on renewal worldview is set to be published in late 2023 by Baker Academic.
He is in an interracial marriage, and his wife was born and raised in the Philippines as a missionary kid. They joke that she is more Asian than he is! He enjoys attending martial arts training with his awesome children!
