Southeastern University extends its Christ-centered culture and leadership development beyond its main campus in Lakeland, Florida, through more than 200 partner sites across the country and even globally. These sites provide students with a supportive environment where they can grow academically, spiritually, and professionally while making an impact in their communities.
One such site is Grace City Leadership Institute (GCLI), a partnership through Grace City Church in Lakeland, Florida. For Isabel Hernandez, studying at GCLI provided the flexibility and support she needed to thrive in her educational journey.
A Path to Communication & Mass Media
Isabel chose to major in Communication & Mass Media because she wanted a degree that covered a broad range of topics. “The best thing about this program is that it doesn’t just focus on one part of the communication world — it focuses on many different aspects, making you great at all of them,” she shares. Through her coursework, she has gained essential skills in communication, digital platforms such as the Adobe Suite and Google Cloud, and an understanding of the ever-evolving nature of media.
The Impact of Professors and Community
One of the most impactful experiences for Isabel during her time at SEU has been the support of her professors. “Professor Chris Underation helped me tremendously when I was struggling with the college/life balance,” she explains. “He sat down with me, identified what I was doing wrong, and guided me on how to improve. His encouragement gave me the confidence I needed to continue.”
In addition to faculty support, Isabel has made lasting friendships at SEU. “Some of the friends I’ve made here have been there for me during the hardest and best times in my life,” she says. “And the professors have helped me become the best version of myself in a way that fits who I am.”
Discovering SEU and Finding the Right Fit
Isabel first learned about SEU at a college fair in Puerto Rico, her home country. “U.S. colleges don’t usually come down here to recruit, so when I saw SEU’s booth, I was curious. Initially, I planned to study pre-physical therapy, but after a few science classes, I realized it wasn’t the right fit. My advisor helped me explore other options, which led me to the Communications department,” she recalls.
Since then, her educational journey has taken her through different formats — starting as a traditional on-campus student before transitioning to GCLI and eventually becoming a fully online student. “I saw that there was an extension site near me, and it just made sense. GCLI gave me the flexibility I needed to successfully complete my degree.”
Spiritual Growth at GCLI
One of the most enriching aspects of Isabel’s time at SEU has been the integration of faith into her education. “Being in a church internship while completing my degree showed me how to lean on God to become my best self,” she says. The spiritual environment at SEU has played a significant role in her growth, from attending chapel to engaging in Bible studies. “SEU has given me space to grow my relationship with God both on my own and with the help of others. Some of my favorite memories are from the SEU Conference.”
Gaining Practical Experience
As part of her program, Isabel had the opportunity to complete her practicum under the Worship Pastor at Grace City Church. “It was a unique experience because I got to choose what I wanted to focus on, and he helped me achieve that,” she shares. Additionally, SEU’s online program allowed her to tailor her electives toward her passion for Public Relations, giving her a well-rounded education that aligns with her career goals.
Why Choose an SEU Partner Site?
Transitioning to online learning provided Isabel with the flexibility she needed to balance her busy life. “SEU’s partner site model has helped me reach potential I didn’t know I was capable of. It allowed me to understand areas of learning that I might not have been exposed to in a traditional classroom setting. Plus, being able to complete my coursework when it fits into my schedule has been a game-changer.”
Looking Ahead
With Isabel’s recent graduation this May 2025, she reflects on the impact of her time at SEU. “The professors, the friendships, and the experiences I’ve had have shaped me into who I am today,” she says. “I would absolutely recommend SEU partner sites to others because of the flexibility, support, and opportunities it provides.”
Through SEU’s partnership with Grace City Church, Isabel found an academic and spiritual home that empowered her to grow in her faith, develop essential career skills, and make lifelong connections. Her story is a testament to the impact of SEU’s mission — extending beyond the main campus and reaching students wherever they are, helping them step into their Divine Design.
