SEU Celebrates First-Gen College Students at “First Rodeo” Event

Every year, we take time to celebrate the students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. Being a first-generation student is a remarkable achievement, and one that often comes with unique challenges. Many first-gen students navigate the college search, financial aid, and academic expectations without a roadmap, carrying both the weight of being a trailblazer and the hope of creating new opportunities for themselves and their families.

On November 5, we gathered to honor these students with a western-themed celebration right in the heart of campus. Cowboy hats, rustic decor, and plenty of smiles filled El Prado as our first-gen students came together in community. It was a space designed to remind them that while they may be the first to take this step, they never walk it alone.

Throughout the event, students explored a wide range of campus resources brought together from departments across the university. From Academic Advising to Student Success, teams from every corner of SEU were present to offer guidance, support, and practical tools for navigating the college journey. These personal connections helped students see the network of people dedicated to helping them succeed.

The afternoon also offered opportunities for students to make memories and enjoy time with friends. Photo stations and themed activities added to the sense of celebration, creating moments that reflected both pride and joy. Blending community, support, and a bit of fun, this event served as a meaningful reminder of the strength and resilience of our first-generation students, and of the SEU community that surrounds them as they pursue their goals.
