We are so excited to announce that our American Center for Public Leadership (ACPL) will be hosting its annual Constitution Day event on Tuesday, September 17, at 10:30 a.m. in the Buena Vida West Auditorium.
This year, the event will feature special guest R. Fred Lewis, former Florida Supreme Court Justice. Lewis will be delivering a keynote entitled “The U.S. Constitution: What Are the American Dreams for Your Generation?”
This event is free and open to the public.
Get to Know the Speaker
Lewis was first appointed to the Supreme Court of Florida in 1998 and served as chief justice from 2006 to 2008. During his time as chief justice, he convened the first commission and statewide all branch mental health summit which developed and proposed a unified plan to address the increasing needs with the intersection of mental illness and the justice system.
He has also been heavily involved in children’s issues, serving as a member of the board of directors of Miami Children’s Hospital and many of its committees and panels. This involvement led to his selection as Florida’s Citizen of the Year in 2001.
Lewis has served as liaison to the Florida Board of Bar Examiners for 13 years, as well as a professor at the University of Miami School of Law since 2010.
He has received the prestigious Justice Sandra Day O’Connor national award for civic education recognizing his work with Justice Teaching as a top civic education program in the U.S. In addition, Lewis was selected for induction into the inaugural class of the U.S. Army ROTC Hall of Fame for leadership excellence.
