Amplify with SEU — David Varela

For David Varela, choosing a college was a combination of many factors; David wanted to find a place where he could grow as a musician, a worship leader, and a person. Though he initially considered studying psychology, everything changed when he visited SEU. A strong sense of community, a deep faith foundation, and an unexpected calling to music led him to pursue a degree in Commercial Music. That decision opened doors to incredible opportunities, including touring across the country with SEU Worship.

Discovering a Calling in Music

David’s journey at SEU started with uncertainty. Torn between psychology and music, he prayed for direction while touring campus. “As I walked around, I felt the Lord calling me to study music at SEU.” That moment of clarity led him to pursue his passion, and he quickly found his place in SEU’s School of Music.

As the semesters progressed and campus life unfolded, David discovered that his journey extended well beyond the classroom, with every interaction and experience deepening his passion and shaping his path forward.

Beyond the classroom, the most valuable lessons came from conversations with his peers and professors. “More than just what you know, who you know matters a lot,” David says. “If you can make connections and sell yourself as a person before a musician, you’ll make it far.”

Life on the Road with SEU Worship

Being part of SEU Worship has not only provided David with real-world experience in the music industry and a glimpse into a future in worship ministry, but it has also opened doors to valuable relationships. On tour, he’s collaborated with incredible musicians and talented peers, fueling his growth both musically and spiritually. “Getting to do what I love with such talented people has been amazing. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by musicians who push you to be better.”

A Community That Feels Like Family

Before officially enrolling in SEU, David came to campus to visit friends who were current students, and that visit truly changed everything. “I didn’t originally plan to come here, but the moment I stepped on campus, I felt an immediate sense of belonging.”

That welcoming atmosphere only deepened once he enrolled. As an outgoing, people-oriented person, David quickly found lifelong friends. “Even as a freshman, I felt included in the SEU community right away.” Between chapel services, house groups, and time spent in music ensembles, he built strong connections that have shaped his college experience.

Growing in Faith and Leadership

One of the most transformative aspects of David’s SEU journey has been learning to take true ownership of his faith. “At SEU, you meet people and professors from so many different Christian backgrounds. It’s great because it helps you see things from a new perspective, but it also challenges you to know what you believe for yourself.”

Through faith formation experiences such as SEU Conference and deep discussions, David was able to reaffirm his beliefs, not just because someone else told him, but because he personally sought out truth through Scripture and the Holy Spirit. “SEU has given me the space to explore and solidify my faith in a real way.”

Hands-On Experience and Future Goals

SEU student, David Varela, with his student-run business, DUMB CoffeeDavid’s time at SEU hasn’t just been about getting hands-on worship experience. He has been able to grow as both a musician and leader. His applied piano lessons helped instill discipline and a strong work ethic, while his practicum experience has allowed him to explore his entrepreneurial side by running his own small business, DUMB Coffee Co., on campus. “It’s been an amazing experience to chase a passion and learn what it takes to run a business.”

Financially, David took a proactive approach by securing scholarships and finding a payment plan that worked for him, which has allowed him to graduate without any student loans. Academic advisors played a key role in ensuring he stayed on track, while SEU’s resources, like the library and music facilities, provided valuable support along the way.

Looking Ahead

David is excited to graduate in the spring of 2025, with high hopes for what’s to come. His experiences with SEU Worship have solidified his desire to pursue music full-time, whether in worship ministry or the broader music industry. “Being at SEU has shaped me into the person and musician I am today. The opportunities, the friendships, and the faith foundation I’ve built here will stay with me long after graduation.”

David highly encourages incoming freshmen to take advantage of every opportunity. “SEU is more than just an education, it’s a place for growth, experiences, and relationships. If you’re looking to develop your skills, deepen your faith, and find a true sense of community, SEU is where you want to be.”
