Flying High at SEU: Student Stories in Aviation

Southeastern University’s Aviation Pilot Program merges cutting-edge flight training at Kingsky Academy with a supportive community that champions faith, leadership, and practical experience.

In this blog, we’re spotlighting two inspiring students, Andrew Hartwig and Palmira Mallino, whose journeys epitomize what makes SEU’s aviation experience unique.

Andrew Hartwig: Pursuing Student Leadership and a Lifelong Passion

A junior in the class of 2026, Andrew Hartwig discovered SEU in a rather serendipitous way. His first encounter came during a Sun ‘n Fun expo back in 2012 — before SEU’s aviation program had even been created. With a family history steeped in aviation, where relatives traveled every spring break for Sun ‘n Fun, Andrew’s eventual connection with SEU felt almost destined.

Andrew’s decision to join SEU was influenced by more than just academic offerings. Having played football in high school, as well as having a deep interest in aviation, Andrew quickly discovered that SEU was his top choice for college. He was drawn to the school’s Christ-centered community, robust student leadership, and the strong ties found within both aviation and football. Andrew explains,

“It was like an answered prayer. I felt that every quality I was looking for — faith, leadership, and hands-on flight training — was right here at SEU. It confirmed that I had found the perfect place to pursue my passion.”

At SEU, Andrew has managed to balance a multifaceted life: he’s an active member of the aviation program and student Aviation Club, a dedicated football player, and a committed commuter life assistant involved in campus life. He relishes the flexibility SEU offers across these areas. Reflecting on the supportive nature of the leadership, he states:

“Leadership here is flexible. They understand that academics always come first. My coaches understand the demands of balancing sports, aviation, and campus roles, and they work with me to manage it all. This supportive approach encourages me to excel in every area.”

What makes SEU’s aviation program stand out for Andrew is the immediate, hands-on experience. From the very first semester, students are encouraged to “get in the plane” to explore if aviation is their calling. He notes:

“You’re in the plane from day one, experiencing real, hands-on learning. This early exposure lets you see if aviation is truly your passion. It’s an immersive experience that few programs can match.”

Deeply rooted in his family’s aviation legacy, Andrew recalls his early fascination with the sky.

“I’d be mesmerized every time a plane flew over our house. Each flight sparked my imagination and deepened my curiosity. That wonder eventually evolved into a lifelong passion for aviation.”

Beyond personal passion, his involvement with organizations like the Civil Air Patrol has honed his leadership skills and deepened his commitment to service.

“Civil Air Patrol truly built my leadership skills and character. Through it, I learned discipline and the value of teamwork. It prepared me for the many challenges I face in aviation today.”

Looking ahead, Andrew embraces a future with countless possibilities.

“I see many paths in aviation to serve and make a difference. Whether through military service, emergency response, or other roles, the opportunities are vast. This program has opened my eyes to the many ways I can contribute to both my country and my community.”

Palmira Mallino: From Discovery Flight to Community Leadership

Junior Palmira Mallino, set to graduate in fall 2025, discovered SEU through a family connection — a cousin who attended about a decade ago. Though she was initially exploring business studies, Palmira’s passion for aviation was ignited after a discovery flight — a unique opportunity where SEU takes prospective students up in one of the aircraft used for the program, allowing them to experience firsthand what it’s like to be in the air. That flight changed everything for her. As she recalls:

“That discovery flight truly changed everything. It was a pivotal moment that opened my eyes to the real possibilities in aviation. I knew then that my future was meant to be up in the skies.”

For Palmira, the strong sense of community at SEU is paramount. She observes that the genuine care and encouragement among students create an environment where everyone feels like part of one big team.

“The community here is incredibly supportive. Every student and faculty member genuinely cares about one another, making it a warm and welcoming place. This unity makes all the difference in our everyday experiences.”

Her decision to pursue aviation wasn’t just about flying — it was about integrating her passion with her faith. Palmira explains why SEU’s aviation program resonates with her.

“SEU’s program blends immersive flight training with a Christ-centered campus. It’s rare to find a place that balances academic rigor with a strong spiritual foundation. This combination makes it the perfect environment for my personal and professional growth.”

For Palmira, the sky is both her workplace and a pathway to explore the world and its diverse cultures.

“Aviation is a rare gift, letting me explore the world and broaden my horizons. It’s not merely a career; it’s an adventure that takes you to new places. I cherish the chance to see different cultures and learn from every flight.”

Her journey in the aviation realm has been as much about personal growth as it has been about flight training. The program has empowered her to take on leadership roles, strengthening both her skills in the air and her character on the ground.

“The program has pushed me to be a leader both in flight and on the ground. I’ve grown not only as a pilot but as a person who takes initiative and inspires others. These experiences have built my confidence in every aspect of my life.”

Finally, Palmira’s commitment to service extends beyond the cockpit. Inspired by her faith, she actively seeks ways to give back.

“SEU inspires me to serve others on campus and in the community. I’m constantly reminded of the importance of giving back through every opportunity I get. This spirit of service is woven into the fabric of our campus life.”

Soaring Ahead

Andrew and Palmira’s stories illuminate the transformative experience that SEU’s aviation program offers. From immediate, hands-on flight training to a nurturing, faith-based community, these students exemplify how SEU prepares them not only for careers in aviation but also for leadership, service, and lifelong growth.

If you’re passionate about the sky, driven by community, or eager to serve, SEU’s aviation program might just be the runway for your dreams.

About Aviation at SEU

Students begin flying in their first semester, or can transfer in an existing FAA Certificate to become a professional pilot sooner than most other university programs. Our degree plans allow students to take many of their flight courses in their first few semesters, enabling them to build flight time as a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and have the opportunity to get work experience while completing their remaining academic courses.
