This spring, 50 students from our choral program will have the incredible opportunity to perform at the highly-esteemed Carnegie Hall in New York City alongside Choral Activities Director Dr. Daniel Gordon.
Dr. Gordon will be conducting his students as they perform Mozart’s Mass in C Major (Coronation Mass) K. 317 with accompaniment from the New England Chamber Orchestra.
They will be performing on April 13, 2024, at 8 p.m.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students,” commented Dr. Gordon. “Carnegie Hall is, perhaps, the most prestigious concert venue in the United States, if not the world. Our students will learn what the word ‘professional’ means in the real world of music.”
The invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall originally came from Peter Tiboris of MidAmerica Productions.
“I had been invited on several occasions to conduct, but it had never worked out. I was asked again this summer, and I agreed with the provision that my students would be invited as well. He thought it was a great idea,” recalled Dr. Gordon.
Getting to New York City
Dr. Gordon and his students are now tasked with fundraising approximately $100,000 to cover the cost of the trip to New York City, breaking down to $2,000 per student, including airfare.
The School of Music is currently working on raising money through concert ticket sales, in addition to crowdfunding.
Dr. Gordon explained, “We have students who are really in need of financial support.”
After their performance, the students will also have the opportunity to take a boat tour around the Statue of Liberty and enjoy a celebratory meal.
“Performing at Carnegie Hall is the privilege of a lifetime, and I’m so excited to share beautiful music that glorifies God alongside some of the most wonderful individuals,” said Kimmy Amparo, a senior majoring in music education with a choral emphasis. “I cannot think of a more incredible way to conclude my journey with the School of Music.”
Dr. Gordon expressed, “Not only is this a tremendous opportunity for our students, but it is also emblematic of how seriously we take what we do here in music education at SEU.”
