Bio

Dr. Gordon is entering his seventeenth year on the SEU faculty. He serves as Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music Education in the School of Music. Dr. Gordon has spent 47 years as a music educator, advocating for the development and proliferation of music programs in schools, churches, and communities across America. Dr. Gordon also serves as Director of Fine Arts Ministries at First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland and as the Music in Worship Repertoire and Resource Chair for the Southern Division of the American Choral Directors Association. Dr. Gordon's choirs at SEU have earned a wonderful reputation for their imaginative programming and beautiful sound. Chamber Singers and Women's Choirs toured Ireland in 2019, receiving rave reviews and warm responses from their audiences.

He formerly served as Chair of Music Education and Coordinator of the Choral Department at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam. At Crane, Dr. Gordon conducted the renowned Crane Chorus and the Chamber Choir. He was also the Artistic Director of the Ottawa Choral Society in Canada's capital city.

Dr. Gordon is respected clinician, guest artist, and adjudicator. He has conducted the Central Florida Bach Choir, the Tallahassee Bach Parley, and dozens of high school festivals all over the U.S. and Canada. He is the winner of a State University of New York Research Award for Teach Music in New York City, a congressionally funded project designed to place music teachers in New York City public schools. Recently, he was in residence at Vanderbilt University where he conducted their choirs in a program of music by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst.

Dr. Gordon is quite proud of his wonderful family. His wife, Mary Grace, is an Equity Actor who starred in over 2,000 performance of Rodger's and Hammerstein musicals during her professional career. His oldest son, David, is a Senior Architect with Red Hat, an open source software company. His younger son, Britt, is a professional actor. Dr. Gordon is also a huge sports fan, particularly baseball. He was the Most Valuable Player on his college baseball team back in 1976.
