Join the School of Music & the ACPL for a Celebration of American Composers

We are excited to announce that the School of Music is partnering with the American Center for Public Leadership (ACPL) in hosting its spring orchestra concert, “A Celebration of American Composers,” on Thursday, February 20, at 7 p.m. in Bush Chapel.

The concert will feature Aaron Copland’s 1942 classical orchestral work “A Lincoln Portrait” with a live narration by ACPL director and former congressman Dennis Ross. Ross will be bringing the text portions of Copland’s work to life, which originate from speeches made by Abraham Lincoln.

“I’m very excited to take part in this event, as I believe the greatness of America has always been our diversity of cultures, ideas, and opinions. The challenges that arise from our differences is what has helped us forge great leaders in this nation,” expressed Ross.

SEU’s Symphony Orchestra will be performing, as well as members of the saxophone quartet. In addition to Copland, they will feature works composed by Omar Thomas and SEU’s director of bands and orchestra, Jason Aylward, who will also be conducting the performance.

“With this concert’s theme, we are exploring what music and composers have said about who we are as Americans throughout history,” said Aylward.

This event is free and open to the public.
