Dr. Alexander Onieal, a Florida native, currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Bassoon at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. He has previously held positions with the Central Texas Philharmonic, New Mexico Philharmonic, and Tallahassee Symphony, and has performed with major ensembles including the New York Philharmonic, The Florida Orchestra, Sarasota Orchestra, and the symphonies of Austin, Charleston, San Antonio, and Santa Fe, among others.
As a chamber musician, Alexander has appeared at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Chatter Sunday, Juilliard ChamberFest, and with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival’s education program. Additionally, he’s toured to Muscat, Oman with the Castleton Festival Orchestra and across the west coast with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. He earned degrees from Florida State University, The Juilliard School, and the University of Texas at Austin, studying with Judith LeClair and Jeff Keesecker.
A passionate educator, Dr. Onieal has built thriving private studios in New Mexico, Texas, and Florida. His students have earned placement in All-State ensembles, performed as soloists with professional orchestras, and been accepted into top collegiate music programs such as the Manhattan School of Music, University of Denver, and Texas State University. Dr. Onieal has presented masterclasses at the University of New Mexico, Louisiana State University, and Illinois Wesleyan University. An advocate for quality instruction for beginning bassoonists, Dr. Onieal presented Building Your Bassoonists from Beginners to Beyond at the 2025 Texas Music Educators Association conference.
In addition to teaching and performing, he is the owner of Onieal Reeds, a small business providing handmade bassoon reeds to players of all levels across the United States. He also serves as Assistant Personnel Manager with The Florida Orchestra. Outside of music, Alexander enjoys spending time with his dog, Summer.
