Dr. Spong received her BA in Elementary Education from Southeastern University. She then pursued a Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on counseling and later a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. During her doctoral studies she received a grant from the Organization of Autism Research and she researched stress and resiliency factors for caregivers of children with Autism. Her doctoral studies and research changed her approach to counseling and supervision to a wellness focused lens. In her most recent position as Assistant Head of School at an independent boarding high school, she developed and launched a wellness curriculum and integrated a wellness approach for both students and faculty. Her pursuits of inspiring her community earned her the Elsie Nunn Head of School's Award in 2023.
Dr. Spong is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina and a National Board Certified Counselor. Her work background includes teaching from elementary through graduate level, school administration, private clinical practice, and being a pastor’s wife. She has a passion for wellness centered living and her counseling specialties include adolescents, women, caregivers and families with children with special needs (specifically neuro-diverse). She actively volunteers in her community addressing inequities that span education, healthcare and housing/food insecurity. She is excited to join her undergraduate alma mater to teach the next generation of professional counselors!
In her free time Dr. Spong loves to read and to travel with her husband Chuck and her four adult children.
