With SEU, I am Challenged — Sophia’s Story

For Sophia, choosing a college meant finding a place where she could grow creatively, develop as a leader, and continue pursuing what God was calling her to do. After being involved in the Assemblies of God Fine Arts ministry and visiting friends on SEU’s campus, she was drawn to the creativity, collaboration, and intentionality she experienced. That led her to pursue a dual path in Graphic Design and Organizational Leadership. Set to graduate in Fall 2027, Sophia’s time at SEU has stretched her in new ways: strengthening her faith, refining her gifts, and teaching her how to thrive in the middle of a full and fast-paced season.

Growing Through Challenge

When Sophia reflects on her time at SEU, one word stands out: challenged.

As a commuter traveling from Valrico to Lakeland, her college experience has looked a little different: balancing school, work, relationships, and community across two places.

“Being a commuter and having two lives in different parts of Florida has been a difficult, yet rewarding experience,” she shared.

Even in the challenge, Sophia has seen growth.

“I feel accomplished by what I’ve pursued at SEU,” she said. “My professors challenge me academically, but also encourage me to be confident in what God has called me to do.”

Her workplace on campus has also played a role in that growth by refining her skills while supporting her unique schedule and lifestyle.

Learning to Trust in the Process

Balancing multiple responsibilities hasn’t always been easy, but it has shaped how Sophia approaches her faith.

“There are days that are still tiring,” she shared. “But I’ve learned to trust God’s plan, even in the middle of it all.”

Through this season, she’s learned that growth doesn’t always come from comfort.

“This lifestyle has shaped me to lean on God and trust what He has for me,” she said.

That perspective has helped her stay grounded, even in busy or difficult moments.

Creativity and Leadership Combined

Sophia’s academic path reflects both her passions and her calling.

At the same time, her involvement in leadership roles sparked a desire to grow in that area as well.

“I wanted to learn how to be the best version of myself as a leader.”

Through her classes, she’s gained both creative and leadership insights that will shape her future.

“For design, I’ve learned that you need to understand the rules before you can break them,” she explained. “And in leadership, there’s not just one way to lead… there are different approaches you can learn from.”

Mentors Who Push You to Grow

At SEU, Sophia has been surrounded by professors and leaders who challenge her to improve and grow.

“When my work is critiqued or challenged, it’s because they want to see me succeed,” she said.

That kind of feedback has helped her grow not only as an artist, but as a person and professional.

“They’ve pushed me to become better in my work and in who I am.”

A Community That Supports You

Through her involvement with SEU Creative, she’s gained hands-on experience that has prepared her for future opportunities.

“My time with SEU Creative has really accelerated my understanding of professional work,” she shared.

She’s also found support within the SEU School of Honors community, where she’s felt encouraged both academically and personally.

“They truly want you to succeed,” she said.

And some of her most meaningful relationships have grown through consistency and shared experiences, including commuting alongside her now fiancé.

“We’ve commuted together every day for the past few years,” she shared. “It’s helped us grow stronger, and now we’re getting married this year.”

A Faith That Shows Up in the Everyday

Sophia’s time at SEU has also shaped her walk with God in simple, meaningful ways.

“Seeing God move through others and in small moments has really impacted my faith,” she said.

Those everyday reminders have helped her stay connected to what matters most, even in a full schedule.

Looking Ahead

As Sophia looks toward the future, she feels confident in what she’s gained during her time at SEU.

Her programs have equipped her with practical skills and a strong foundation in creativity and leadership.

“I’ve learned that collaboration, communication, and community are some of the most important things for the future,” she said.

More than anything, her time at SEU has helped her trust that God is working through every part of her journey.

Community Focus

Sophia’s story reflects what it means to be challenged at SEU — not overwhelmed, but stretched in ways that lead to growth, confidence, and clarity.

For students considering SEU, her encouragement is simple:

“SEU finds a way to make your dreams and aspirations work for you,” she said. “Everyone’s path is different, but the people here are there to help you grow academically, relationally, and spiritually.”
