On Friday, April 4, the SEU Link Program hosted Build a Bridge — a powerful evening dedicated to raising awareness and promoting inclusion for individuals with disabilities. The heart behind the night was simple yet deeply meaningful: to equip our community to be informed advocates and to help create spaces where everyone can thrive.
Laura Grace Hodupp, assistant director of the SEU Link Program, opened the evening with a message that set the tone. “No matter who you are in the room tonight, we hope that you would walk away feeling better equipped to create spaces for individuals with unique abilities to be able to use the skills that they do have as they step into their future.” That spirit of empowerment was woven throughout the entire evening.
Guests heard personal stories from third-year Link students Seth, Lydia, and Caleb — who shared how the program has helped them grow both academically and personally. From classroom support to hands-on internships with local organizations, each student highlighted how the Link Program has prepared them with highly beneficial life skills. Their stories were a strong reminder of what’s possible when students are given the right tools and encouragement to pursue their goals.
One of the most impactful parts of the night was a set of simulation experiences, where attendees had the opportunity to step into the shoes of someone with a disability. These hands-on activities offered a glimpse into the day-to-day challenges individuals may face — whether in learning, communication, or physical mobility. For many, it was an eye-opening experience that deepened empathy and understanding.
The evening wrapped up with a community panel featuring local leaders and advocates who are working to make workplaces and organizations more inclusive. The panel shared real-world insights on how we can all play a part in supporting individuals with unique abilities — reminding us that true inclusion starts with awareness, compassion, and intentionality.
The SEU Link Program continues to pave the way in creating inclusive spaces and empowering students with unique abilities to step confidently into their future — and we’re excited to see the bridges that will continue to be built because of it.
Background on the SEU Link Program
The SEU Link Postsecondary Transition Program was founded in 2018 with a grant from the Florida Center for Students with Unique Abilities (FCSUA). SEU Link offers post-secondary transition education for students with intellectual disabilities. This two-to-three year program aims to improve employability, independent living, and self-advocacy skills. It is one of the few faith-based programs of this type in the nation.
Link students live on SEU’s Lakeland campus, attend classes, complete internships that align with their career goals, and participate in on- and off-campus activities just like other undergraduate students at SEU. The program’s focus is on integrating students into the full college experience, while providing crucial support through a mentor system. Students are paired with academic, residential, and social mentors who come alongside them throughout their college experience. This unique program is an excellent opportunity for students who are looking to hone their skills and grow as individuals in a supportive, caring, and Christian environment.
Exceptional Student Education at SEU
In addition to SEU Link, Southeastern University’s Lakeland campus is also home to Pathways School of Excellence, which opened in 2016 and serves middle and high school students with special needs.
The SEU College of Education also offers multiple learning opportunities for current and future education professionals who want to work in, or enhance their skills in, Exceptional Student Education.
