For AJ, choosing a college was influenced by the people and experiences that had already shaped his life. Growing up as a pastor’s kid, he had always been surrounded by ministry, but over time, that exposure turned into something more personal. Through prayer and seeking the Lord, AJ began to sense a clear calling to ministry. With strong influences in his life who had attended SEUand a desire to grow deeper in his faith, he chose SEU and began pursuing a BS in Ministerial Leadership. Now set to graduate in 2028, AJ has experienced how his time at SEU has not just prepared him for ministry, but formed him into who God is calling him to be.
A Calling Confirmed
Ministry had always been part of AJ’s life, but choosing it as his own path took time.
“Because I’m a pastor’s kid, I’ve been around ministry my entire life,” he shared. “Over time, through prayer and seeking the Lord, He revealed to me that I was truly called to ministry.”
That clarity didn’t happen all at once. It came through prayer and a willingness to follow where God was leading.
Being Formed Through Everyday Moments
When AJ reflects on his time at SEU, one word stands out: formed.
“There are so many things the Lord has done during my time here that have shaped me into the person I am today,” he said. “He’s revealed gifts, passions, and a sense of purpose in my life.”
Some of the most impactful moments didn’t happen in big, defining events, but in the consistency of everyday experiences, especially at SEU Chapel services.
“There have been many times where the message felt like it was meant just for me,” AJ shared. “I’ve left with a notebook full of notes that I can still go back and look at today.”
House groups, student-led discipleship groups, also played a key role in that formation, giving him space to grow in community and actively live out his faith.
Growing in Faith and Consistency
Through these experiences, AJ learned how to apply knowledge from his classes to his everyday life.
“It allowed me to take what I’ve learned and put it into practice,” he said. “That’s helped me grow in so many ways.”
More than anything, his time at SEU has helped him build consistency in his relationship with God, something he knows will carry into his future.
Lessons That Shape a Calling
In his Ministerial Leadership classes, AJ has learned truths that continue to shape how he approaches ministry.
“One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that we are imperfect people serving a perfect God,” he shared. “And that you can’t pursue your calling while staying comfortable.”
Those lessons have given him a stronger perspective on what ministry really looks like, and what it will require of him moving forward.
Professors Who Help You Step Into Your Purpose
Throughout his time at SEU, AJ has been supported by professors who have invested in both his growth and his calling.
Dr. Ben Gomez has played a significant role by giving him opportunities to step into ministry and develop his leadership. Dr. Valerie has also been an important voice, helping guide AJ academically and answering questions along the way.
“They’ve helped me grow and understand how I can become better in what I’m called to do,” he shared.
A Community That Strengthens You
Community has been a defining part of AJ’s experience at SEU.
Through house groups, classes, and everyday life on campus, he’s built relationships with people who share a similar passion for ministry, as well as friendships outside of his field.
“We talk about our futures and what God is doing in our lives,” he said. “And I’ve also built friendships through house groups and mutual connections that will last beyond graduation.”
These relationships have given him both encouragement and accountability as he continues to grow.
A Faith-Centered Environment
One of the most impactful parts of AJ’s time at SEU has been the environment itself.
“When God is at the center of a university, it’s hard to miss His presence,” he shared.
From chapel to house groups to everyday conversations, AJ’s SEU journey has created consistent opportunities to grow in his relationship with God.
“It’s naturally helped my relationship with Him deepen,” he said.
Looking Ahead
As AJ looks toward the future, he feels confident in the foundation SEU has given him.
His program has equipped him with the knowledge and skills needed for ministry, while also helping answer important questions about what it truly means to be a pastor.
Beyond the classroom, his involvement in internships, serving in chapel, and engaging in the local church has helped prepare him for what’s ahead.
Community Focus
AJ’s story reflects what it means to be formed at SEU — shaped through faith, community, and real-life experiences that prepare you for your calling.
For students considering SEU, his advice is simple:
“Pray and ask God if SEU is the right place for you,” he said. “And if you do choose SEU, be ready for what God has for you during your time here.”
