Peer mentors are essential members of the Link Program team. Our dedicated group of Residential, Academic, and Social mentors work together to provide guidance and support to students as they transition towards independence. Peer mentors undergo continuous training and receive ongoing support from Link staff to ensure they can offer intentional assistance.
Our peer mentors are dedicated to empowering students, fostering independence, and promoting growth, all while ensuring that each student feels valued and supported.
Residential Link students are paired with an SEU student as their roommate; this student also serves as their mentor. This supportive and inclusive living arrangement provides students with the chance to enhance their adaptive skills and executive functioning, while receiving guidance and support. Rooming with a mentor also allows students to observe and learn valuable time management, organization, and interpersonal skills. Our residential mentors work to create a positive and nurturing environment to equip Link students for success in independent living.
For approximately four hours per week, Academic Mentors support Link students by guiding them through assignments in a way that helps them develop both critical and independent thinking. Our mentors are trained in a number of different strategies which can be utilized to meet their mentee’s specific learning needs.
Additionally, mentors train students to navigate the online learning portal, communicate with professors as necessary, utilize assistive technology, and increase digital literacy skills. Academic mentors play a valuable role in empowering Link students to take ownership of their learning and to experience the rewards that come with academic diligence and hard work.
Social Mentors help Link students develop their social skills and engage with the campus community by connecting them to a variety of opportunities such as clubs, intramurals, community service activities, and even off-campus events. Social mentors support the expansion of their mentees’ social circles and play a key role in encouraging meaningful relationships, increasing social awareness, and boosting confidence.
